A damaged Lower Palaeolithic heavy-butted flint handaxe

Description: A heavy-butted pale grey flint handaxe with mottled brown patination. A large area of cortex remaining on the butt and on the lower part of one side. The tip missing (perhaps 10-15 mm/0.4-0.6 in.) and the broken fracture surface chipped and percussion marked. Locality of find not known but likely British and from southern England.

Size: 107 mm/4.2 ins. in length

Culture: Lower Palaeolithic

Date: c. 300,000-500,000 years B.P.

Provenance: Previously in a southern English private collection.
