Description: A substantial dark brown quartzite pointed handaxe of classic tear drop form, some abrasion of the surface due to exposure to desert winds and with a small chip to the tip, but condition good and a nice heavy example. Recovered from the Idehan Marzug dune field, southwest Libya, close to the border with Chad (coordinates of area where found recorded as 23°46'52.6"N 18°19'20.5"E).

Size: 195 mm/7.7 ins. in length and weighing 1 kg

Culture: North African Palaeolithic

Date: c. 250,000-300,000 years B.P.

Provenance: Reputedly bought to England by a British soldier who served in North Africa during the Second World War, who obtained it from Bedouin traders.
