Code: 2708

£85.00

Description: A red glass hair ring comprising an open-ended circular ring imitating red jasper. A few minute edge chips, otherwise condition good and a nice example of the type.

Size: 14 mm/0.5 in. in diameter

Culture: Egyptian

Date: New Kingdom, c. 1550-1069 B.C.

Provenance: Ex West Sussex private collection.

Notes: Red glass was used to imitate more expensive jasper or carnelian. They were twisted into the hair or wigs to provide brightly coloured hair-pieces for Egyptian women, a practise still seen in many cultures today.

In our opinion, probably slightly lighter in shade than the pictures might suggest.
