A major report by the RAND Corporation, one of the most respected research organisations in the USA, shows the illicit trade in antiquities is much smaller than academics have suggested. It concludes looting is opportunistic rather than organised and more widely dispersed than previously thought.
The RAND Corporation report highlights how international policy has been shaped by dishonest agendas, largely pushed by self-promoting academics and bloggers, rather than any solid evidence. The investigators found no evidence that illicit antiquities sales are occurring to any extent on Facebook, Telegram or on the Dark Web.
