Description: A brown and red chert pointed handaxe of classic tear-drop form, the surface smoothed through exposure to desert winds and with a semi-glossy patina, particularly on one side, and a nice symmetrical example. Recovered from the Idehan Murzug dune field, southwest Libya, close to the border with Chad.

Size: 118 mm/4.6 ins. in length

Culture: North African Palaeolithic

Date: c. 250,000-300,000 years B.P.

Provenance: Reputedly bought to England by a British soldier who served in North Africa during the Second World War, who obtained it from Bedouin traders.
