A Greek Gnathia Ware black glazed prochous, c. 4th Century B.C.

Description: A Gnathia Ware black glazed prochous with a high-arched handle, the body decorated with vine leaves and tendrils in cream and with bands of dots, ovolo and tongues in cream and yellow on the neck. Two bands of crimson also enliven the upper part of the vessel and with two small masks modelled where the handle meets the neck. A very nice undamaged example, the body of slightly squat form.

Provenance: Part of Lot 540 in Bonhams Antiquities Sale, Knightsbridge, London, 16 May 2002, listed as ex Collection of Monsieur S.C. Afterwards part of an extraordinary and extensive collection of ancient, Asian and modern art and luxury items assembled from the 1970s to the early 2000s by a buyer believed to be from the Middle East, after which it was warehoused for nearly 20 years. The collection is believed to have been assembled as an investment.
