A Lower Palaeolithic flint handaxe from Barnham in Suffolk

Description: A grey flint cordate handaxe with an attractive glossy mottled dark brown patina, some inoffensive wear, a chip to the tip exposing the colour of the flint, and a possible larger retouched chip near the tip, but a nice example. A layer of cortex forming the sharply inclined butt, found at Barnham in Suffolk (marked Norfolk on implement).

Size: 110 mm/4.3 ins. in length

Culture: Lower Palaeolithic

Date: c. 400,000 years B.P.

Provenance: From a southern English private collection.

Notes: Roe (1968) records over 230 handaxes from Barnham but notes ‘material, probably a considerable amount, is known to have passed into private collections’.
